Balance is a Joke

Who decided that we need to have it all? And what joker came up with the theory that you CAN have it all..that all you need to do is find balance?

Listen, we are always tipping more to one side than the other as we go through our days and weeks and months and years. I’ve leaned much further to the work side of that tightrope and almost fallen into the abyss. There have been times that I overcompensated and leaned more to the personal/family side and had to struggle to regain a happy medium. We are always tipping left an right and flailing in an effort to stay right in the middle…in that ‘sweet spot’.

I think if we stay in the moment and lean to whichever side calls us, we may be more content. Don’t look left, don’t look right, don’t look down–always look up and ahead. That is where we are going, after all.

Our lives can get so complicated and we have distractors that come in many forms. People can clamor for our attention. The bills need to be paid. Our parents or children may need our help. Our boss needs everything done yesterday. The dog(s) need to be walked, bathed, and cared for. The housework is never-ending. Dinner needs to be prepared and dishes done. The car is making a funny sound. And who just had storm damage to deal with?? I mean, it never ends!!

I have clients who are walking that tightrope every day; Selling or buying a home is a HUGE deal. The paperwork and transactional side of it is pretty much the same each time, but the emotions that go with it are not. Every time I walk into a client’s home (whether it’s a Showing or a Listing Appointment), I am walking into someone’s life, their family story, their memories. Black & white photos framed and displayed on a mantle or nightstand…Wedding pictures of children or family members that I’m sure bring joyous memories to the homeowner.

Balancing the business and emotional side of a transaction (Oh, how I despise that word!) has always been a challenge for me because I’m just a big old, sentimental mush. My deepest desire is that my clients will be happy…that I am able to counterbalance any speed bumps that appear during our covenant and protect them, in an almost parental way. There is a deep-seeded need in me to ensure nothing throws them off balance because they are already balancing so many other things. Being ready to duck and dodge as we move forward and buffer my clients from unnecessary discomfort has its own challenges and I accept those challenges willingly.

At the end of the day, balance is more about poise than position, more about sanity than symmetry.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24
